For the 11 million Americans who are classified as “severely obese” – that is, at least 100 pounds overweight – being fat is not just an aesthetic concern. It’s a serious health issue. In fact, obesity-related illness is the second-leading cause of preventable death in the United States. (Smoking is first.)

Diet and exercise don’t work for these folks, so many turn to more drastic alternatives, such as weight-loss surgery. In 2000, about 40,000 Americans had some kind of obesity surgery, the best known of which may be gastric bypass (also known as stomach stapling).
