After former Unilever Bestfoods employee Dean Chenarides was allegedly fired for whistleblowing, a Stamford judge looked beyond the letter of the law to rule that an actual statutory violation is not necessary. The judge found a statute that outlaws firing workers based on pregnancy but only applies to companies with three or more employees. Although the act doesn't apply to everyone, its underlying nondiscrimination policy does.
