Invoking the classic movies “Cool Hand Luke” and “Pale Rider,” an attorney for a Venezuelan television network tried to get a judge Friday to reverse course and reject sanctions for a discovery violation in a dispute with Telemundo over telenovelas.

“What we have is a failure to communicate,” attorney Albert J. Piantini told U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman, quoting a famous line from “Cool Hand Luke.” The hearing continued late Friday, and Goodman gave no indication when he would rule.

Piantini represents Latele Television C.A., which is suing Hialeah-based Telemundo Telecommunications Group in a copyright infringement lawsuit in Miami federal court. Latele claims Telemundo's renowned “El Rostro de Analia” stole its premise from Latele's “Maria Maria” show.
