Akerman has paid $250,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. alleging negligence in the law firm's handling of a real estate loan by its client, failed Englewood-based Peninsula Bank.

Firm spokeswoman Marlisa Serrano confirmed the settlement was reached in November but declined further comment.

The lawsuit filed in 2013 in Tampa federal court named as defendants Akerman; Miami partner William C. Arnhols, who chaired the firm's banking, lending and structured finance practice; and Drake Batchelder, former managing partner of the firm's Fort Lauderdale office. Batchelder is no longer with the firm.
