America's largest provider of home-security systems lost a major legal battle against a competitor it accused of trademark infringement and alleged deceptive trade practices.

On Tuesday, a federal jury in West Palm Beach decided Salt Lake City-based Alarm Protection Technology LLC's name and its acronym, APT, do not cause confusion with the name of ADT LLC, a publicly traded company based in Boca Raton.

Jurors also concluded APT didn't make misleading representations to ADT's South Florida customers to get them to switch alarm companies. ADT, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange, sought $27 million in damages, which represented the alleged profits APT made from poached customers.
