A Palm Beach County jury Friday awarded some 22,000 Palm Beach County homeowners—whose trees were chopped down by the state in a citrus canker eradiction program—a total of $19.2 million in damages plus interest.

The verdict represents $289 for each of the 66,493 trees chopped down—close to what the plaintiffs were asking for in the 15-year-long class action lawsuit.

It will be offset by $3.2 million—the amount of $100 Wal-Mart gift cards and $55 checks from the state homeowners received as compensation for their destroyed trees.
