The families of 17 U.S. Navy sailors killed in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole won $48 million in damages against the government of Sudan.
U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar in Norfolk, Virginia, issued an order Friday awarding $14 million in punitive damages and $34 million in damages for emotional pain and suffering to 61 of the 63 plaintiffs. He promised an individual breakdown later.
Miami attorney Andrew C. Hall, a founding partner of Hall, Lamb and Hall who represented 57 of the sailors' relatives, said Doumar's order paves the way for how much money family members of terror victims will receive for punitive damages.
