Florida was six months ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court in legalizing same-sex marriage, and supporters of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights say they will now focus on attacking other legal barriers.

David Young, a former television judge and Miami-Dade circuit judge running for judge again, was attending the annual Florida Bar conference when the decision was released. Watching the Supreme Court website on his laptop, he started grinning when the ruling was posted. Young married his longtime partner, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Scott Bernstein, in New York in December.

“The fact that my marriage is valid in all 50 states means we don't discriminate in the United States any more,” Young said. “There is no separate but equal. I feel validated.”
