A jury exonerated a doctor in a case involving an alleged violation of a prisoner's rights.
Jose Garcia, an inmate at Okeechobee Correctional Institution, claimed several medical care requests in March 2010 were denied, resulting in an optical stroke.
Assistant Warden R. McKraken was dismissed as a defendant before trial. Garcia sued the prison doctor, Dr. Haridas N. Bhadja, for constitutional rights violations. Defense counsel denied all charges, maintaining Garcia's medical issues were appropriately addressed, and he was provided with two pain prescriptions while he awaited transfer to permanent housing. The jury concurred, finding Bhadja knew of the medical need and did not fail to provide necessary medical care.
