If your client's family has a multibillion-dollar fortune, you usually don't have to worry about getting paid.
So it was surprising for Miami attorney Ronald Weil when he found himself needing judicial intervention to secure attorney fees from Azzan bin Abdulla Al Ghurair, the son of a Dubai businessman whose net worth is $7.1 billion, according to Forbes.
The situation has now reached a fever pitch, with Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Thornton entering a civil contempt order against Al Ghurair on May 11 for failing to show up in court three separate times. The judge also found Al Ghurair in contempt for not providing his attorneys with a mortgage to Brazilian luxury villas that would secure the more than $1.9 million in legal fees he owes and for not sending them a list of his assets and liabilities.
