Lion Country Safari is celebrating its 50th birthday with a change of ownership.

Wildlife conservationist Marcella Leone has agreed to purchase the Palm Beach County outdoor attraction, the park announced Tuesday. Leone is founder and director of the Connecticut-based nonprofit Leo Zoological Conservation Center, which focuses on breeding endangered species.

“Since 1967, Lion Country Safari has been a leader in animal conservation and display,” marketing director Jennifer Berthiaume said in a statement. “While continuing to build on this foundation, Leone will significantly expand upon the park's conservation and education programs. There are plans to bring many new and exciting species to Palm Beach County.”
