South Florida is often viewed as the poster child for the nation's housing affordability crisis with a large chunk of its population unable to enter a pricey residential market catering more to foreign investors and wealthy vacationers than homegrown buyers.

Renting has become just as unaffordable. Among Miami renters, over a third spend more than half their income on rent.
