MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

PALM BEACH CIRCUIT COURT

A jury awarded a man $275,000 for his claim that his leg was unnecessarily amputated after two emergency room visits.

In 2012, Stanley Rovner, 74, arrived at the West Boca Medical Center ER complaining of right-leg pain. He was diagnosed with muscle strain and discharged. Eight days later, he returned, complaining again of leg pain. Tests revealed a blood blockage and irreversible tissue damage, requiring amputation below the knee. The amputation was performed. Rovner alleged the doctor failed to detect the blockage in time to save his leg.

The hospital's counsel argued Rovner had shown no blockage at his first ER visit, and it was his long-term arterial disease that made the leg amputation necessary.
