Akerman partner Steven J. Wernick has played a direct role in the planning and evolution of many suburban neighborhoods, most notably Miami's fast-changing Wynwood neighborhood.
Wernick represented the Wynwood Business Improvement District in the formation of the Wynwood Neighborhood Revitalization District, which sets a framework for a mixed-use neighborhood that promotes walkability and public-private spaces.
The revitalization district created a parking trust fund and a public benefits fund to generate investment in Wynwood's public realm through private-sector contributions, including enhanced open space and affordable housing. A transfer development rights program encourages the retention of legacy structures.
