A Sears anchor store in the Town Center at Boca Raton is closing in early April, the second department store in South Florida that's announced plans this week to close its doors. The Macy's in downtown Miami also is closing the same month.

The Sears at 5900 W. Glades Road is shuttering as part of a nationwide downsizing that's closing 39 Sears stores and 64 Kmart stores, Sears Holdings Corp. announced Thursday.

Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based Sears Holdings Corp. owns Sears, Kmart and Roebuck and Co.

The Boca Raton Sears is on the southeast corner of Glades Road and Andrews Boulevard. Its auto center will close by the end of January, according to the company statement.

The closing is another indication that brick-and-mortar stores, especially department stores, are struggling in light of growing e-commerce and evolving shopping habits.

Both Macy's and Sears said they are trying to find the right mix of physical stores and an online presence.

Sears is closing unprofitable stores “so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members,” the company said in a statement.

The other department stores closing this year in Florida are Kmart locations at 1002 E. Highway 50 in Clermont, 10301 SE U.S. Highway 441 in Belleview and 3711 E. Silver Spring Blvd. in Ocala and the Macy's at The Oaks Mall in Gainesville.
