MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

ORANGE CIRCUIT COURT

A jury found a Longwood medical practice was not to blame in a patient's fatal heart attack.

In February 2012, a doctor with Associated Family Medicine II examined James Ferris, 47, for a physical. Ferris complained of shortness of breath and pneumonia. He was diagnosed with a pulmonary condition. In March, Ferris had a heart attack and was given a heart transplant. He died after his body rejected the transplant. Ferris's estate alleged he should have had been given an EKG and referred to a cardiologist.

The practice argued Ferris' complaints were consistent with lung problems, so there was no reason for an EKG or a referral. The treating doctors previously settled, and another medical practice was dismissed from the case.
