MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

BROWARD CIRCUIT COURT

A widower recovered $456,000 after his wife died due to the delayed treatment of a brain bleed.

In March 2014, Remonde St. Pierre, 65, went to a hospital with pain in her left knee and face after a fall. Dr. Peter Oravitz discharged St. Pierre after an X-ray of the knee was negative. St. Pierre returned two hours later with headaches, nausea and vomiting. A CT scan revealed a subdural hematoma and an extensive brain bleed. She underwent a craniotomy and died 16 months later. Her husband claimed Oravitz caused St. Pierre's condition to worsen by discharging her without ordering a CT scan.

Oravitz claimed St. Pierre's symptoms of facial swelling and pain were secondary to her knee complaint, and was not indicative of a head injury.
