The University of Florida has the best law school in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report rankings released Tuesday.

UF's Levin College of Law was ranked No. 41 in the nation, the same placement it achieved last year. Other Florida law schools followed behind: Florida State University at 47, University of Miami at 65, Stetson University at 98 and Florida International University at 101.

“We will continue our quest to become a top 10 public law school,” UF Law Dean Laura Ann Rosenbury said in a statement. “Last year's seven-point surge in the rankings put us on the right track. We remain laser-focused on implementing new strategies to help our students become leaders in the legal profession and beyond.”

Rosenbury previously said she intends to help boost the school's ranking to the mid-30s in about three years.

Since she became dean in 2015, UF law applications have increased 112 percent and the median LSAT score of the incoming class has gone up 4 points, according to the school. Rosenbury credited much of the school's success to donors, including alumnus Hugh Culverhouse Jr., a Coral Gables attorney who made a $1.5 million pledge last year.

UM moved up 12 spots in a year for one of the biggest improvements in the annual assessment. The law school declined to comment on the rankings.

The rankings also recognize law schools for their success in specialized areas. Stetson is rate No. 1 in the country for trial advocacy and second for legal writing, according to U.S. News. UF has the nation's third-best tax law curriculum, and Florida State's environmental law program ranked 10th in the country.

Florida State's law school dean celebrated the school moving up one spot from last year.

“We are thrilled that U.S. News continues to rank us among the nation's top law schools and that we continue to improve in these rankings,” Dean Erin O'Connor said in a statement. “We are also delighted that the strength and robustness of our environmental program is reflected in the No. 10 ranking.”

FIU dropped one spot in the annual report.

The rankings are based on a mix of metrics including bar passage rate, employment after graduation and the average LSAT scores and GPAs of admitted students. U.S. News is the only major publication that ranks law schools.

The publication ranks the top 150 accredited law programs. Other Florida schools were not ranked, including Ave Maria University, Barry University, Florida A&M University, Florida Coastal School of Law, Nova Southeastern University and St. Thomas University.

Ave Maria and Florida Coastal were disciplined last year by the American Bar Association for enrolling students who were unlikely to graduate or pass the bar.
