MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

BREVARD CIRCUIT COURT

A jury found an orthopedist was not to blame for a patient's foot drop.

On Nov. 30, 2011, Maria Mullen underwent a right knee arthroplasty, which was performed by Dr. Daniel King. During the procedure, King allegedly lacerated the popliteal artery and vein, which required the assistance of a vascular surgeon to repair them. King then completed the knee surgery. Several days later, Mullen developed a right foot drop, which she claimed was caused by King's surgical error.

King claimed injuries to the popliteal artery and vein were known complications of an arthroplasty. He also claimed Mullen's foot drop was not caused by the alleged lacerations and blamed other medical conditions.
