Homegrown spice maker Badia Spices Inc. is expanding its operations into a 54,361-square-foot warehouse in Doral, where the company is based.

Badia bought a two-story building at 2101 NW 82nd Ave. for $9.5 million from Lagunita Holdings Inc., according to the Miami-Dade County property appraiser's office.

The warehouse, built in 1989 on 2.74 acres, is part of the Miami International Commerce Center, a 3.5 million-square-foot collection of industrial, office and flex spaces, according to the owner, California-based real estate investment trust PS Business Parks Inc.

The center is less than a mile west of Miami International Airport, and less than a mile from the Dolphin and Palmetto expressways.

Badia was established in 1967 by Cuban exile Jose Badia, who fled the island nation in the 1960s. He recruited his son, Joseph “Pepe” Badia, to the company, and the younger Badia now is the president.

Aside from spices, the family-owned business also produces sauces, marinades, seasoning blends and teas and distributes its products in more than 70 counties, according to its website.

Badia is based at 1400 NW 93rd Ave., an 88,284-square-foot, one-story warehouse built in 1990 on a 5-acre lot.

The company also owns four other industrial buildings in Doral, according to county property records. They are an 8,281-square-foot, two-story building at 1571 NW 93rd Ave.; 13,858-square-foot, two-story building at 1600 NW 93rd Ave.; 9,589-square-foot, one-story building at 1700 NW 93rd Ave.; and the 93,819-square-foot, one-story building at 9880 NW 25th St.

The latest purchase, which closed Aug. 1, breaks down to $175 per square foot.
