BROWARD CIRCUIT COURT

A motorist who suffered wrist and thumb injuries in a collision recovered $141,000 in damages after the jury assigned the bulk of liability to him.

On Oct. 14, 2016, Brian Chackman, then 24, was driving on Stirling Road in Hollywood when Rivka Barash's minivan pulled out of a parking lot and made a right turn into his lane. Chackman struck the minivan's left rear corner. He fractured his right wrist's distal radius and ulna, and tore a ligament in his right thumb. Chackman claimed Barash was distracted by her phone, and he didn't have time to stop and avoid the crash.

Barash, a director for Chabad Outreach Center of Emerald Hills Inc., claimed Chackman failed to slow down or stop before the crash because he wasn't paying attention. The jury found Chackman 70 percent at fault, reducing his $470,000 award.
