The Florida Supreme Court has disbarred Jeremy Alters, once among South Florida's most prominent litigators.

The high court Wednesday ruled that Alters had violated Florida Bar rules concerning safekeeping property and the application of trust funds.

His disbarment is effective immediately.

Read the Florida Supreme Court's order disbarring Alters:

Before this ruling the state Supreme Court had ordered an interim suspension against the Dania Beach-based attorney in May, as it considered the case against him.

Alters was a well-respected player in South Florida litigation, having made his name as a high-stakes class action litigator and fundraiser for the Democratic Party.

That all ended once gatekeepers discovered more than $1 million missing from his firm's trust accounts and used to fund Alters' personal and business expenses.

This is a developing report and will be updated.
