Ira Leesfield

Ira Leesfield, a well-known defense attorney, philanthropist and political donor, will be honored at a Friday luncheon hosted by Lawyers for Children America.

Leesfield will receive the 2018 Janet Reno Outstanding Community Partner Award at the John Edward Smith Child Advocacy Pro Bono Awards Luncheon. Newly elected Rep. Donna Shalala will present the award.

“Ira Leesfield is an attorney of the highest caliber who is committed to equal justice for children and other defenseless populations,'' said Carolyn Salisbury, director of LFCA, in a statement. “He partners with so many organizations in our community to ensure the protection of our most vulnerable citizens, following the tradition of the work of Janet Reno.”

Reno was the first woman to serve as U.S. attorney general, appointed by former President Bill Clinton. The Miami native was also the co-founder of the LFCA, which provides pro bono legal representation to children who are victims of abuse, abandonment and neglect.

“I'm honored to get the award,” Leesfield said. “Janet Reno was a longtime friend and pioneer in a lot of ways, and this organization does amazing work.”

Leesfield is no stranger to recognition: In his 40-plus years as a personal injury attorney, he has garnered numerous other honors. In 2001, the Anti-Defamation League awarded him the “Jurisprudence Award” for his commitment to the field of law and racial and ethnic unity. He has also received honors from the Melvin M. Belli Society and Florida Justice Association.

Leesfield also chairs the Leesfield Family Foundation, an organization he founded in 1991 that focuses on protecting underprivileged women and children through law school scholarships, disaster relief and school improvements.
