Day Pitney has absorbed Richman Greer, adding 15 attorneys to the Connecticut-based firm's Miami and West Palm Beach practices, as Richman Greer leaders Alan Greer and Gerald Richman move into of counsel roles with their new firm.

The acquisition, first announced in October, serves two purposes for the Florida attorneys, said Greer.

First, it finalizes a succession process that has been in the works for years. Richman and Greer have helmed the litigation firm since the mid-1970s. It was time to pass leadership onto the next generation, Greer said, and a merger with an Am Law 200 firm such as Day Pitney was the perfect opportunity to ensure the health of the firm.

“Neither Gerald nor I wanted to hold on to the firm till the bitter end and let it fall apart,” Greer said. “I still love practicing law, and you have to hand over the firm to younger people to keep things viable.”

Second, the merger allows for Richman Greer's lawyers to expand their client offerings while still maintaining a strong degree of autonomy. Notable clients of the nearly 60-year-old firm include Merrill Lynch, Magic City Casino, Borden Dairy Co. and several big law firms such as Greenberg Traurig and GrayRobinson, according to the firm's website.

“Our practices will continue pretty much the way they were, but we'll have a bigger business base. They let each office have its own identity,” Greer said.

Manny Garcia-Linares has maintained his role as managing partner of both offices, and all Richman Greer attorneys and staff have also jumped to Day Pitney.

Greer joined Richman Greer—then called Frates, Fay, Floyd & Pearson—49 years ago. He grabbed headlines this year for representing former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno's Kendall estate. The two were close friends. Outside of his firm, Greer is the chairman of the charity Camillus House, an organization that provides clothing, food and shelter to homeless and indigent people.

Richman joined the firm nearly 50 years ago. He's served in a variety of positions over the years, including as Florida Bar president and with the American Board of Trial Advocates.

The addition of Richman Greer's attorneys push Day Pitney's Florida lawyer count to 22. Four Richman attorneys have joined Day Pitney as partners: Gary Betensky, Michael Napoleone, Mark Romance and Garcia-Linares.

Eleven other attorneys, the rest of Richman's staff, have also joined: Katherine Coba; Nathaniel Edenfield; Alan Graham Greer; Dolly Hernandez; Charles  Johnson; Amanda Keller; George Metcalfe Jr.; Adam Myron; Steven Naclerio; Gerald Richman; and Georgia Thompson.
