The Broward County Courthouse was evacuated Thursday after the Broward Sheriff's Office received report of a suspicious package around 9 a.m.

The bomb squad was on the scene and gave the all-clear at about 11 a.m. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department also assisted BSO and directed traffic.

Broward Sheriff's spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said BSO responded to a report of a suspicious bag outside 540 SE Third Ave., where the court processes pretrial and misdemeanor hearings.

Broward Circuit Chief Judge Jack Tuter said officers guided courthouse personnel on the threat level and whether to evacuate the building.

“It did cause some disruption to the courts in that traffic was diverted away from Sixth street,” the judge said.

Within about two hours, law enforcement officials said it was safe for staff to return to work.
