MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

BROWARD CIRCUIT COURT

A man who required a leg amputation due to osteomyelitis that developed following a knee replacement was awarded $10.8 million, and his wife was awarded $1.1 million for loss of services.

Matthew Standley claimed his knee replacement was not medically necessary and Dr. Melvyn Rech failed to prescribe prophylactic antibiotics at the time of the surgery. Standley also alleged the orthopedic surgeon was unresponsive to post-operative attempts by other doctors to reach him about a possible infection. Treatment failed, and Standley's left leg was amputated.

Rech's defense attorney withdrew shortly before trial, and the doctor did not attend the trial. He is no longer licensed to practice medicine in Florida.
