PALM BEACH CIRCUIT COURT

A jury awarded more than $2 million to the estate of a Palm Beach State College student who was killed along with a friend in a single-car accident while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Anthony Llera, 20 was driving his father's Ford Mustang convertible on Interstate 95 on March 8, 2003. Llera attempted to turn left onto Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard from the off-ramp. The car swerved, crossed the median, crashed into a tree and rolled over. Llera died at the scene. He spent the previous few hours at Ohm Lounge, a West Palm Beach bar that held its liquor license as Allen & Stormy's Bar Inc. Llera's father, Ramon Llera, acting as the representative of his late son's estate, sued the defunct Ohm Lounge, Allen & Stormy's Bar Inc., and the bar's corporate owners, alleging Anthony Llera had been served alcoholic beverages beyond the point of intoxication.

A default judgment was entered, and the matter proceeded to a damages trial. The jury set damages of $2 million.
