LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT

FLORIDA

On Sept. 5, 2017, Colin Morrison, 65, worked for Dish Network from January 2015 until he was fired as a satellite dish technician for working on a roof without safety equipment. He claimed he was fired in retaliation after suffering a shoulder injury on the job and filing a workers' compensation claim, and the case went to arbitration.

Two installers said they were following their supervisor's instructions to go on the roof to install the dish. Morrison said he knew about the zero-tolerance policy for working on a roof without safety gear but he didn't want to be accused of insubordination.

The supervisor denied telling the workers to get on the roof. The defense said Dish Network has fired other employees for a single safety violation and kept employees who filed workers' compensation claims.

The arbitrator awarded $189,343, including $100,000 for emotional distress and the rest split between past and future lost earnings.
