MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

PALM BEACH CIRCUIT COURT

A jury ruled for a medical clinic after a patient claimed he was given a prescription that led to him contracting a rare disorder.

In April 2014, Raul Cepero, then 79, was diagnosed with gout and given the drug allopurinol. Cepero claimed a rash broke out on his body and his eyelashes grew inward. He was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a serious disorder that can be caused by reaction to medication. Cepero was hospitalized for three months and underwent multiple surgeries.

Primary Care Specialists of the Palm Beaches LLC disputed allopurinol as the cause. Defense counsel argued several other medications could have been triggered the syndrome. The jury found no negligence by Primary Care Specialists.
