Carlton Fields’ appellate co-chair and shareholder Richard J. Ovelmen, a staple of the Miami legal community, died Tuesday at 67 after a brief illness.

His 40-year legal career covered a spectrum of specialties, including constitutional, land use, defamation, class action and intellectual property law. But he was best known for his zeal arguing for First Amendment rights and transparency in government.
