The New Jersey Supreme Court heard arguments and the Florida Supreme Court set a schedule in cases asking whether a criminal defendant can be compelled to provide passcodes to locked cellphones or if that amounts to improper self-incrimination.

In State v. Andrews, the New Jersey justices must decide whether to uphold an appellate ruling that law enforcement officers acted within legal bounds when they confiscated and retained Robert Andrews’ cellphones and required him to provide the passcodes.
