The Florida Supreme Court's Judicial Nominating Commission has wasted no time in pursuing replacements for two state Supreme Court justices elevated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit last November.

The state high court's JNC on Thursday released a list of nine nominees it has certified as candidates to replace former Justices Barbara Lagoa and Robert J. Luck.

The list includes five women and four men, seven of them judges. The JNC made its picks after all-day interview sessions with potential candidates Jan. 11 and Jan. 12 in Orlando. Gov. Ron DeSantis will make the final selections for the two open posts.

Luck and Lagoa, both of whom were appointed by Gov. Rick DeSantis, served less than a year as state Supreme Court justices. Luck was confirmed to the Eleventh Circuit by the U.S. Senate on Nov. 19 in a 64-31 vote. The next day, the Senate confirmed Lagoa's appointment in an 80-15 vote. Their confirmations flipped the Eleventh Circuit to a majority of GOP-appointed judges, five of whom were named by President Donald Trump.

The JNC's certified candidates include:

  • John Couriel, a Miami-based attorney at Kobre & Kim, who ran an unsuccessful race as a Republican candidate for the Florida House of Representatives in 2016;
  • Judge Renatha Francis of the Palm Beach Circuit Court, who was appointed to the bench by Gov. Rick DeSantis;
  • Judge Jonathan Gerber, of Fourth District Court of Appeal, appointed by former Gov. Charlie Crist;
  • Judge Jamie Grosshans, Fifth District Court of Appeal, appointed by former Gov. Rick Scott;
  • Judge Norma Lindsey, of the Third District Court of Appeal, appointed by Scott;
  • Judge Timothy Osterhaus, of Florida's First District Court of Appeal, appointed by Scott;
  • Eliot Pedrosa, U.S. executive director of the Inter-American Development Bank
  • Judge Lori Rowe, First District Court of Appeal, appointed by Crist;
  • Judge Meredith Sasso, of the Fifth District Court of Appeal, appointed by Scott.
