The 10-attorney Fort Lauderdale insurance defense firm McIntosh Sawran & Cartaya merged into Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney, which gains its first Florida office.

Founded in Chicago in 1986 and still operating there, Segal McCambridge now has nine offices from New York to Texas. The firm's website listed 108 attorneys Thursday, not including the newest members.

"This combination is the latest step in our strategy of growing and diversifying our platform and adding talented lawyers to provide deeper resources and more comprehensive services to our clients across the country," Mark Crane, Segal McCambridge managing shareholder said in a statement announcing the merger.

He welcomed the McIntosh Sawran team and said Florida "has long been a market where we felt we could deepen our service offerings."

All seven McIntosh Sawran shareholders, including the three name partners, and three associates made the move, which took effect with Wednesday's announcement. They keep the same titles.

"From our perspective, it seemed to be a good mesh of not only clients and practice groups but also the personalities involved,"  James Sawran, McIntosh Sawran managing shareholder, said in an interview Thursday. He noted the firms share some clients.

They talked for a year and completed the merger deal this week, he said.

"Beyond the ability to plug into the firm's national platform, we were struck by the synergies of our two firms, including both boasting more than three decades of service to insurance clients," experienced trial attorneys and an emphasis on pro bono and community service, Sawran said in a statement.

Founded in 1989, McIntosh Sawran has focused on defending medical malpractice, professional liability, health care, products liability, aviation, admiralty, complex insurance coverage, bad faith and first-party claims.

Segal McCambridge serves corporate and insurance industry clients in products liability, toxic torts, employment law, environmental law, premises liability, transportation law and complex commercial disputes.

Clients include insurance companies, medical device makers, automakers, trucking companies and other manufacturers.

The firm's other offices are in Austin and Houston, Texas, Detroit, Jersey City, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia and St. Louis.
