HIGHLANDS CIRCUIT COURT

A jury awarded more than $200 million to a pregnant woman who suffered placental abruption when a drunken driver ran into the passenger side of a car where she was sitting.

Isamar Garcia, 21 at the time, blamed the 2015 crash on her son's severe brain damage and her spinal injuries. Her son Ezekiel is nonverbal, blind and suffers about 20 seizures a day.

The defendant, who was convicted of drunken driving, was uninsured and unrepresented, so the damages award of $202 million, is largely unrecoverable.
