HILLSBOROUGH CIRCUIT COURT

A judge awarded more than $1 million in damages to a Florida Highway Patrol officer who claimed she was injured in a line-of-duty traffic accident.

Jacquelyn Rux, then 38, was stopped at a red light in Hillsborough County when her unmarked SUV was struck from behind by a car whose driver was uninsured on Jan. 9, 2017. Rux sued her own insurer, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., claiming that accident caused herniations and bulges of spinal discs and required surgical fusion of her neck.

During trial, State Farm presented a biomechanical expert who opined the accident could not have caused Rux's injuries, but the jury awarded her more than $1 million.
