Miami-Dade courts issued a health advisory to anyone who appeared in two criminal divisions Tuesday and Wednesday after a court employee became ill with flu-like symptoms.

As a precautionary measure, people who appeared in the courtrooms of Circuit Judges Miguel de la O and Gina Beovides were advised to monitor themselves for two weeks for any signs of coronavirus such as fever, cough or difficulty breathing.

The Miami judges work on different floors in the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building at 1351 NW 12th St. near Jackson Medical Center, de la O in Courtroom 4-7 and Beovides in Courtroom 2-2, and the employee was in both courtrooms.

No details were given about the sick employee aside from saying the person sought medical care and is staying home. Coronavirus testing would be done if the employee had symptoms for more than 48 hours.

Anyone who visited the courtrooms or the judges' chambers was advised to isolate themselves if they develop any symptoms, limit contact with others and call a health care provider to determine if an in-person medical evaluation was needed.

A Florida flu health advisory said influenza infections unrelated to coronavirus increased this week, with Influenza A 2009, better known as H1N1, being the predominant strain.

South Florida had mild infection levels, but infections were considered widespread because they were seen in all but eight of Florida's 67 counties, the report said. Two vaccinated children with underlying health conditions died during the week for a total of 12 deaths in children this flu season.

Coronavirus monitoring information was offered by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
