Miami Freedom Park rendering Future home of Inter Miami MLS soccer team in Miami

It's been years in the making, so what's another month?

David Beckham's Miami professional soccer team Inter Miami CF postponed its home opener after Major League Soccer suspended play for the next month in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Inter Miami was scheduled to play at home for the first time Saturday in its newly built Fort Lauderdale stadium against the L.A. Galaxy. The team debuted in Los Angeles, losing 1-0 to Los Angeles FC on March 1.

Jorge Mas, one of Inter Miami's investors, told a news conference Thursday that the team still plans to play all 34 games this season but might have to reevaluate the plan if the suspension of play is extended.

The announcement came on the heels of the NBA suspending play Wednesday after a Utah Jazz player tested positive for the coronavirus, and the National Hockey League did the same Thursday. Major League Baseball delayed the start of its season for at least two weeks. And college basketball's March Madness is out the door.

Inter Miami has overcome major hurdles as multiple stadium sites came and went. In the end, the team settled on the city-owned Melreese golf course east of Miami International Airport and temporary quarters at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The future home will include a 25,000-seat stadium and over 1 million square feet of office and other real estate development.

By late Thursday, Florida reported 35 coronavirus cases with two deaths and 448 people tested.
