Florida Attorneys Face Off in Board of Governors, President-Elect Races
Jacksonville-based Michael Tanner and Ocala attorney Renee Thompson are vying to become next in line for the presidency of the Florida Bar. Monday is the last day to vote.

Monday is the last day of voting for the several Florida Bar elections taking place across the state.
Jacksonville-based Michael Tanner and Ocala attorney Renee Thompson are vying to become next in line for the presidency of the Florida Bar and replace Dori Foster-Morales as the incoming president-elect.
Thompson is a civil litigator and mediator at Upchurch Watson White & Max. She chairs the bar's technology committee and has represented the Fifth Circuit on the Board of Governors since 2013. Tanner is a business litigation partner at Gunster who sits on the Board of Governors representing Duval County.
In addition to the presidential race, contested elections are also being held for five board of governors seats. Platform statements can be found here.
- Escambia County: Clark Partington shareholder Jeremy Branning and Pensacola-based public defender Ryan Lane Morrow.
- Orange County: Shutts and Bowen partner Michael Sjuggerud and Orlando-based solo practitioner Tad Allen Yates.
- Broward County, Seat 1: law blogger William Gelin and Kim Vaughan Lerner managing partner Jay Kim.
- Broward County, Seat 4: Fort Lauderdale-based solo practitioner Hilary Creary and Miramar-based solo Christina McKinnon.
Five attorneys are also jockeying for two contested seats on the Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors. Platform statements can be found here.
- Fourth Circuit, Seat 2: government attorney Valeen Arena, Fletcher & Phillips attorney Angela Huston Miller, and Sarah Morris, a criminal defense attorney in the Jacksonville Office of Criminal Conflict and Civil Regional Counsel.
- Sixth Circuit, Seat 2: Baskin Eisel Rightmyer partner Randall Baskin and Martinez Denbo attorney Benjamin Thomas.
Votes must be received by midnight on Monday. The bar is expected to announce results Tuesday. Any runoff elections will be conducted between April 1 and April 22. New terms will begin June 19.

The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
