Jacksonville attorney Mike Tanner has edged out Ocala-based attorney Renee Thompson in the race to become the Florida Bar's next president-elect.

Tanner, a business litigation partner at Gunster, received 8,647 votes to Thompson's 8,558. Tanner will officially become president-elect in June 2020, replacing Miami attorney Dori Foster-Morales, who will be installed as president.

Tanner advocates for a strong, independent judiciary; protection of current member benefits; curbing unprofessional behavior; and maintaining the mandatory bar structure. (See his Florida Bar platform.)

Thompson, a civil litigator and mediator at Upchurch Watson White & Max, ran on improving diversity and inclusion; providing support to small and solo practitioners; and leveraging technology to improve the lives of member attorneys.

On Twitter, Tanner said he is "humbled and honored" and thanked his supporters while casting himself as an "optimistic" leader.

"In my platform I described myself as an optimist," he wrote. "This is still true and I believe the best days for our profession are ahead."
