History was just made at the Eleventh Circuit Court.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Judge Lody Jean to the Miami-Dade Circuit Court on Friday, elevating her from the county court bench.

Jean, a native of Haiti of Lebanese descent, has campaigned in the past for greater diversity on the Miami-Dade bench. Now, she said she will serve as the first Haitian American to sit on the Miami-Dade Circuit Court.

"I'm honored and humbled," Jean said Friday. "I got the call last night from the chief of staff, Shane Strum, and I spoke with the general counsel a couple of hours later. They called to congratulate me."

The Miami-Dade Circuit Court has seen several new judges recently. DeSantis also elevated Judge Zachary James this month, and Judges Ramiro Areces, Christina DiRaimondo and Robert Watson were added late last year from Miami-Dade County Court.

Jean is a Coral Gables resident who rose to the Miami-Dade County Court last April. She was the first Haitian-American woman appointed to that court, according to the Florida Bar. She is a former state prosecutor who rose to the position of felony division chief, and prosecuted murder cases while supervising other attorneys.

Jean earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Miami. She is a St. Thomas University School of Law graduate. While she was in law school, Jean was a recipient of the Haitian Lawyers Association scholarship. As her career progressed, she eventually served as the president of the association.

Jean takes over for Judge John Schlesinger, who has retired after 15 years at the post. She knows a lot is expected of her.

"I am happy just to continue serving," Jean said. "I love my job. I am grateful every day for my job. Every day that I get to put on that black robe, I just pinch myself."
