The Florida Bar had planned to launch its new confidential attorney helpline in July. But in the shadow of COVID-19, now seemed as good a time as any.

Beginning Friday, attorneys will be able to connect confidentially with professional counselors, who will help them deal with family and medical woes, work pressure, substance abuse and other issues.

The service will be free for all bar members and open 24/7.

In a press release Thursday, Florida Bar President-elect Dori Foster-Morales said the bar took this step as professionals advised that the pandemic has amplified anxiety, depression and loneliness.

"It is clear that our members, like all of society, are facing an epic moment of collective crisis," Foster-Morales said in a press release. "We are here to serve our members in whatever way we can, and we hope that activating this new helpline quickly will provide the assistance lawyers need when so much of our lives has been turned upside down."

All services will be virtual or over the phone for now, with a view to incorporating in-person meetings once social distancing measures ease.

The counselors from CorpCare Associates Inc. will also be able to help with family issues, including finding long-term care facilities for family members or connecting with financial consultants to advise on debt management, budgeting and retirement planning.

Beginning May 1, bar members can reach the helpline at 1-833-FL1-WELL (1-833-351-9355).
