LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT

MIAMI-DADE CIRCUIT COURT

A jury decided against a woman who claimed a floral shop fired her as a manager because she was pregnant.

Elyse Varela, who was in her 20s in June 2016 when she was dismissed, had been hired as an events manager in March 2016 and notified her employer in late May that she was pregnant. Her lawsuit alleged her boss informed her that she was being terminated because her position required her to stand for prolonged periods of time.

The defense argued Valera was fired because she wasn't performing the duties she was hired to perform. The jury found no evidence of discrimination.
