Name a secret ingredient or two for effective mentoring

  1. Personal connections. Get to know those on your team and who you mentor. Recognize that their lives outside of work greatly contribute to their challenges and success, and the role of mentor is not only to promote work successes, but to be there to guide through the speed bumps of life.
  2. Honesty. Your mentors must know that what they hear from you is real. Good, bad, ugly or indifferent. A mentor doesn’t do anyone any favors by sugar coating or refusing to be transparent.
