On Feb. 25, 2016, plaintiff Bryton Lawson, 7, attended Cahoon Elementary Magnet School, which was located at 2312 E. Yukon St., in Tampa. While Bryton and his classmates were entering their classroom, a teacher slammed the classroom's door. The door snared and injured two of Bryton's fingers.

Bryton's father, Willie Lawson, acting on Bryton's behalf, sued the school's operator, the School Board of Hillsborough County. The lawsuit alleged that Bryton's injuries were a result of a negligent act by the teacher. The lawsuit further alleged that the School Board of Hillsborough County was vicariously liable for the teacher's actions.
