On March 10, the Florida Legislature passed CS/HB 7, which limits covered employers’ ability to conduct certain types of mandatory employee trainings and related activities that address the topics of discrimination, diversity, inclusion, and unconscious bias in the workplace.

Though officially titled “Individual Freedom,” CS/HB 7 was originally announced in December 2021 by Gov. Ron DeSantis as a legislative proposal titled “The Stop the Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees (W.O.K.E.) Act,” which closely resembles President Donald Trump’s 2020 Executive Order that prohibited federal agencies and contractors from conducting workplace trainings which promoted “divisive concepts” and “anti-American race and sex stereotyping and scapegoating.” Similarly, the governor’s office has stated the act is intended “to protect Florida workers against hostile work environments that [are] created when large corporations force their employees to endure Critical Race Theory-inspired training and indoctrination.”
