Slavery is America’s original sin. The hallmark of slavery is it is divisive. It divided Africans from their homeland. It divided Black families who were sold as chattel. It divided this nation into a civil war that, to this day, is the deadliest war in American history. And, sadly, the issue of slavery continues to divide us to this day.

The Florida Department of Education adopted a Social Studies curriculum for Florida K-12 students (the curriculum) that has reopened old wounds and further unearthed the fault lines of our politics, racial and otherwise. The Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Bar Association calls on the Miami-Dade community and entire state to resist the urge to derision and division while we bring correction with courtesy and poise.
