The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit entered an opinion Thursday to a federal district court judge in Miami who abused his discretion when he learned a juror had a niece who worked for Royal Caribbean and failed to investigate that connection.

The case before the Eleventh Circuit involved Michael Eriksen, a partner at the Eriksen Law Firm in West Palm Beach, who represented the plaintiff, Carelyn Fylling. Fylling sued the defendant, Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD., represented by Juan Perez Jr., a partner at Horr Novak and Skipp in Miami, over a personal injury the plaintiff sustained while aboard one of its ships.
