The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a warning for attorneys and law firms: Cybercriminals are posing as lawyers to offer cryptocurrency recovery services to victims of investment scams, but instead steal their money and personal information.

Dr. Ilia Kolochenko, a partner and cybersecurity practice lead with Platt Law in its Washington, D.C. office, said in an email that the rapid proliferation of GenAI, frequently available for free and without any verification of user’s identity, is “rocket fuel for computer-enabled fraud.” For instance, a bad actor might do so through the creation of a fake website mimicking the law firm.
