A federal judge ruled this week that Elon Musk’s X Corp., formerly known as Twitter, will face a trademark infringement suit from a legal advertising company, X Social Media, after determining the plaintiff sufficiently alleged its trademark was entitled to protection and there was a likelihood of consumer confusion between the companies.

Musk acquired the social networking platform Twitter in 2022 and announced its rebrand to X in July 2023. X Social Media, founded in 2015, is a Windemere, Florida-based legal advertising company and social media service that connects consumers with legal services. The plaintiff claims the rebrand has damaged its market strength, financial resources and advertising leverage.
