What You Need to Know
- After fighting tooth and nail to get an amendment on the November ballot, Florida's cannabis players are still expecting more obstacles.
- With Gov. Ron DeSantis coming out against the bill full force, lawyers in the space expect the implementation period to be cumbersome.
- But if the ballot measure passes and a reasonable regulatory environment blooms, lawyers expect more transactional opportunities.
After spending over $100 million to bankroll an amendment that would ask Florida voters whether to legalize marijuana recreationally, cannabis industry players might still face an uphill battle to get the law implemented even if voters approve the ballot initiative.
The measure is facing mounting opposition from Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has come out strong against the bill, even using government funds to create attack ads against the amendment. And because it's up to the legislature to regulate the industry if the ballot initiative passes, lawyers in the space think it's entirely possible that there may be a fight ahead.
